Instructor: Steve Huston
Duration: Jan 6-10
Time: 10:00am-6:00pm PST
Online Full Access: $399
Online Standard: $299
Difficulty: All levels

Steve Huston’s works are poetic, poignant, and masterfully powerful. He has been an extraordinarily effective mentor whose instruction and guidance have produced an impressive number of accomplished acolytes.

This workshop will focus on painting the figure from start to finish in a way you never have before. How do we get from a beginning sketch to a finished painting? Over the course of 5 days, you will immerse yourself in the human figure and the process of painting. Steve Huston will take you back to the fundamentals, and guide you through to more complexity. There will be a multitude of demos, lots of time to practice live along with fellow artists, and a thorough analysis of old and new masters. This workshop will be so intensive, you will be on whole new skill level upon its completion.

You will learn how to apply your drawing skills to a finished painting. Keeping the fundamentals of drawing in mind, you will begin with something clean and simple. Then, you will naturally build onto it, layer by layer, with both color and value structures. This approach insures that the finished work produces one seamless idea. This also makes the finished piece fresh, exciting, powerful, and beautiful.

You will benefit from Steve’s generous teaching style as he provides informative lectures and beautiful demonstrations. Full Access participants can upload photos of their daily work into the class chatroom and get a full critique from Steve, where he will trace over your paintings and provide individualized feedback. You can watch the recordings on your own time, and you do not have to participate in the critiques if you don’t want to.

The workshop will be streamed live all around the world on all 5 days from 10:00am – 6:00pm PST. You will receive online access to the recording to rewatch for one year or six months, depending on your purchase plan. This is helpful to reinforce the principles of each day, and to catch any concepts you may have missed the first time around.

Steve is a great instructor who really breaks down the painting process in an intuitive and easy-to-follow way. I love his instructional style and I also loved the way the course introduced new concepts incrementally over the five days.

I think one of Steve’s greatest strengths is his ability to rationally and systematically explain pretty abstract concepts in ways the students could make use of immediately. For example, telling us to put a little of the same color into different objects to create color harmony or telling us to always follow the long gesture in our brushstrokes. I know they’re very tactical tips but they help illustrate the larger theories much better than if he were to simply lecture in the abstract. I had plenty of ‘aha’ moments in this class and I felt like I walked out with instant and measurable improvement in skill.

One note, I would consider myself a novice painter and found the speed of the instruction to be faster than I could keep up with. The lectures were fine but the painting demos seemed to go at lightning speed. This isn’t a critique of any sort, just feedback on how the pacing felt to a beginner.

A couple areas of feedback on the course:

It would be nice to get some information before the course begins around the timing of different things just so my expectations are set properly:

    (1) Like several other students, I missed the first day of instruction due to work conflict. It would have been nice to know ahead of time that you will post the archive video in the morning the next day just to properly set expectations and so I could plan my schedule for how I would try to catch up. Having that info posted ahead of time could probably have saved you guys all the questions you fielded about it in chat also.

    (2) I know the “lunch break” occurred at different times everyday but it would have been good to get some information about when to expect it. Something to the tune of “We’ll have a lunch break for one hour everyday starting between noon and 2pm. Unfortunately, due to the nature of live class instruction, the break may begin at a different time each day.” Even if you can’t guarantee a stringent break schedule at the same time everyday, just this much info would have been vastly helpful for me to schedule work calls around.
