Steve Huston

Steve Huston is a native of Alaska who received his degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He first established himself as a successful illustrator, commissioned by such high-profile clients as Paramount Pictures, MGM, and Warner Brother After holding a faculty position at the Art Center, in addition to teaching courses in life drawing, anatomy, and composition for the artists and animators of Disney and Dreamworks SKG studios, Huston earnestly began his career as a fine artist, winning top prizes at the California Art Club Gold Medal Show two years in a row. A string of gallery shows followed, first in Los Angeles and then in New York and elsewhere.

Huston continues exhibiting his work widely. His works are poetic, poignant, and masterfully powerful, and his figures are iconic archetypes of masculine and feminine line and form. His work is much sought after by prestigious private collectors, distinguished fellow artists, and other cognoscenti of the contemporary art world. He has been an extraordinarily effective mentor whose instruction and guidance have produced an impressive number of accomplished acolytes

1. Sketchbook to take notes
2. French easel (only if you have one already)
3. At least 4-6 Bristle Brushes sizes 4 to 10. Rounds happen to be my preference.
4. Odorless turpentine, such as Turpenoid. I use Gamsol from Gamblin
Have a lidded container to hold it in. Art stores sell glass jars with coils at the bottom to clean the brush away from sediment. These work well.
5. Rags or paper towels.
6. A glass palette about 20” X 24” or bigger.
7. One-sided razor blades with a blade holder (gotten at any hardware store)
8. Palette knives and medium are optional.
9. Painting surfaces can be about anything that has been gessoed. Bring 3 or more each day. 12” X 14”, 14” X 18” size range.
Store bought canvas board is the easiest. Stretched canvas is the most expensive. Matt board, cardboard, Illustration board can all be gessoed and used.
10. Paint – oil paint is recommended.
Art Store Brand, Winton and Rowney are student grade paint and so are cheaper and would be fine for black and white. The colors better to get quality brands. I use the large tube — Gamblin
1. Titanium White Large tube.
2. Ivory Black
3. Ultramarine Blue (reddish blue)
5. Alizarin Crimson (bluish red)
6. Napthol Red, Cadmium Red Medium (any slightly yellowish-red)
7. Hansa Yellow Cadmium or Yellow Pale or Chrome Yellow, etc.(reddish yellow)
8. Cadmium Yellow Light or Lemon Yellow, etc. (Slightly bluish-yellow)
Optional
Indian Yellow or Transparent orange (only in Windsor Newton or Gamblin)
10. Viridian or Turquoise or any blueish-green
