Figure Drawing: Construction and Rendering 5 Day Workshop

This workshop is now over. You will have access to the video recordings and reference photos, but you cannot submit your work for critique from the instructor.

In this 5-day workshop Steve will show you how to construct the human figure including structure and gesture and some anatomy. You will learn what the major landmarks of the body are and how to simplify and conceive the different parts of the body including:

The Neck
The Shoulder Girdle
The Rib Cage
The Pelvis
The Arms
The Legs
Hands and Feet

On the last 2 days Steve will also show you how to use the laws of light and work with anatomical issues during his rendering lecture.

Supply List-

Sketchbook to take notes.
Writing instrument to take notes.

Several charcoal pencils- Black or earth tone in color.
Carb-Othello or General, etc.

12” 18” drawing pad or larger
Choose a paper surface that is fairly smooth so that you don’t have to fight the texture when you add your tones:
Newsprint or
Bond
Marker paper
Or whatever your preference is

Drawing board store bought or cut wood to back paper and
two art clips to hold paper. This can be used if you don’t have a drafting style table to work from. Just set the drawing board against the edge of any table with the bottom resting across your lap. I usually do just this even though I have several drawing tables.

A matt or X-acto knife to sharpen pencils.

An art store sand pad or just plain old sand paper to sharpen pencils.

Strathmore Bristol regular, Series 400, 2 ply or better
Black Alpha Color
Conte’ stick – 2B black
Kneaded eraser
Hard eraser- (not pink, it will stain the paper
If you have it you can use an electric eraser as well.
A small stump.

  1. Profile photo of Heather Heather says:

An intense five day course that is absolutely jam-packed full of information. Be warned if you live further afield than the US, it will be a struggle for 8-9 hours a day. I’m in the UK and finishing at 1 or 2am was hard-going physically and mentally. However, the best part is that you get to watch it over and over for those parts you may have missed. There were some technical issues, but, Steve stayed on longer to compensate for that. Final day was quite hiccoughy though.

The course itself contains an incredible amount of information, and Steve delivers it brilliantly alongside sharing his and others’ philosophical views on art, which was wonderful to listen to. You get roughly half an hour each day to draw then submit your own work for critique and this is invaluable. You may not think you’ll get a lot of from half an hour’s drawing but, trust me, you will. The final day, you get to draw 3 times for about 20 mins each, staying on the same drawing if you want so you can make improvements and get further critique on it.

I went from horrible, basic figures on day one to vastly improved by day five. I was so incredibly anxious and tearful by day two, feeling I was doing terribly. I was comparing myself to others (most artists do), when I should’ve only compared myself to what I’d done previously. I felt I wasn’t picking up some of the things Steve was teaching – I heard them but couldn’t seem to translate them into my drawings. But something clearly did sink in; these are the best legs I’ve ever drawn in my life!

Another thing, the staff were fantastic, and all so helpful and engaging. Overall, this course is completely invaluable. I will definitely be signing up for more in the future.

  2. The only way this could have been better, would have been less technical difficulties and reduced time between switching cameras.

    Over all, a wonderful course.
