The primary purpose of this 3-day intensive is to understand anatomy not only as an academic discipline but as the means through which the human figure should be viewed and depicted.

Participants will develop their knowledge of the underlying structures of the human form and use them to draw the model from life.

This workshop will consist of a long pose with an emphasis on rendering and learning to tie in structural anatomy with surface form.

Participants will also be drawing quick figure sketches to practice capturing the significant anatomical structures responsible for the gesture.

In this 10-week online pre-recorded class, you will learn how to go from a drawing to a finished painting with professional figurative artist and portrait painter, Joseph Todorovitch. In the first half of the class you will a tonal approach to drawing that focuses on value massing and the importance of design in shape and edge in relation to the form. You will train with a procedural approach, which forces you to work simple, then gradually progress to more complexity. The second half of the class will be devoted to applying this approach to painting and analyzing the connection between the two mediums. You will start by working monochromatically with black and white and over time color and color theory will be introduced. This will help students paint with more freedom and understanding

Learn to paint the figure from life in this 5-day in-person workshop with award-winning professional artist, Hollis Dunlap! In this workshop, students will focus on composition, light effects, proportions, edges, and various methods of paint application to create interesting paintings. Several techniques will be demonstrated such as how to plan the composition, drawing from large shapes to small shapes, paint application, interpreting color based on the sources of light, and how to revise the painting as you go. Students will work 6 hours per day with a live model, with a minimum of 12 hours for each pose. Students are welcome to either paint the portrait, a 3/4 view, or the full figure.
