Charles Hu is a figurative artist and notable art instructor with over a decade of experience teaching figure, anatomy, and head drawing and painting.
In this class Charles will teach a direct, confident approach to painting the figure in oils that leverages both graphic and constructive elements to create works with appeal, impact, and solidity.
Charles will begin with black and white color only, focusing on value grouping, edge control and composition. Then he will transition to a limited color palette (Zorn's palette).
Charles uses a limited palette so you don’t get overwhelmed with the full spectrum of color while learning the basics. A limited palette also helps to keep color harmonized and makes it easier to understand color mixing while still focusing on value relationship.
Two or more colors will be added to the palette each week, and by the end of class, you will be exploring a full palette.
Charles will be covering Value, Color Intensity, Color Temperature, Edge, Color mixing, and Paint Application.
There will be demo and a lecture along with exercises that will help you understand each week’s topic.
Charles will be using oil paint as his main source material. Water color, acrylic, and pastel are also welcome, as Charles has taught these mediums in the past.
This class is all about observation, analyzation and putting down the correct relationship.

Charles Hu is a figure painter and notable art instructor, and has been an anatomy and figure drawing instructor in Los Angeles for over a decade. In 2007, he co-founded his own fine art school, 3Kicks Fine Art Studio in Pasadena, California, and has influenced and instructed countless students and artists. Charles received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He began his instructional career at L.A. Academy of Figurative Arts. His commissions include numerous portrait paintings, character designs for film and game pitches, murals and comic books for the movie End of the Spear. His work has been exhibited at Wendt Gallery in Laguna Beach California. Charles currently instructs at Art Center College of Design and Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood.
Sales are non-refundable, but in some cases we can switch a student’s enrollment in a class that has not yet started to another class of equal or lesser value. Art Mentors reserves the right to cancel, limit enrollment, substitute instructors or models, reschedule or modify a class with notice to enrolled students. If a class is canceled, enrolled students will be given a refund. If an instructor is unable to finish a class term, a refund will be given to students at a pro-rated amount.
